Spirit Airlines Shuts Down After 34 Years, Citing High Oil Prices and Failed Bailout
Spirit Airlines ceased operations on May 2, 2026, canceling all flights and stranding passengers after failing to secure a government bailout amid rising oil prices from the war with Iran. U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy announced assistance measures, including capped rebooking fares from other airlines.
Tomás Del Coro / Wikimedia (CC BY-SA 2.0)Spirit Airlines announced on May 2, 2026, that it has gone out of business after 34 years, citing high oil prices driven by the war with Iran as making operations unsustainable. The airline stated it has started an orderly wind-down of operations, with all flights canceled effective immediately and customer service no longer available.
Air traffic control audio from May 2 captured pilots on Spirit's last flights exchanging farewells with controllers at airports including Dallas Fort Worth and Chicago O'Hare. One pilot at Dallas Fort Worth said, "This is it tonight," after confirming no more Spirit flights were incoming.
The shutdown leaves approximately 15,000 employees without jobs, though AP reported the figure as 17,000. About 6,000 of those employees were based in Florida, where the airline was headquartered in Fort Lauderdale.
“It's hard to believe this is it," the Spirit Airlines pilot says in the audio, shared by ATC.com. "Yeah, no kidding," tower staff reply. "It's been a pleasure to talk with you guys on the radios. Hope you guys can make it out OK.”
The Air Line Pilots Association stated that the closure is a devastating blow to more than 2,000 ALPA pilots and thousands of other employees. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said at a May 2 news conference that other airlines are offering preferential interviews to Spirit staff who lost their jobs.
Passengers arrived at airports on May 2 to find flights canceled, with some learning of the shutdown upon arrival. At Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, passenger Taylor Nantang expressed shock upon discovering the cancellation of her family's flight to Miami.
Another passenger, Joshua Sigler, who had purchased a ticket the previous day, decided to return home rather than rebook, noting he received no communication from Spirit. Spirit advised customers to expect refunds, with a reserve fund for those who bought directly from the airline, while third-party purchases require seeking refunds from vendors.
Duffy announced that United, Delta, JetBlue, and Southwest agreed to cap ticket prices at $200 one-way for Spirit customers with confirmation numbers and proof of payment, for a limited time. These airlines also committed to helping stranded Spirit employees return home and providing a preferential application process for jobs.
The Trump administration considered a bailout for the cash-strapped airline, which had entered bankruptcy proceedings for the second time in less than two years, but no deal was reached.
“We are proud of the impact of our ultra-low-cost model on the industry over the last 34 years and had hoped to serve our guests for many years to come.”
Spirit reported working to return more than 1,300 crew members to their home bases, with the final flight landing at Dallas Fort Worth from Detroit Metropolitan Airport. Laid-off flight attendant Freddie Peterson, who had worked for Spirit for 10 years, described the airline as having done wonders for him but criticized management for poor communication in the final days.
m. on May 2 via the company website and returned to Atlanta on a Delta flight. Photos from May 2 showed grounded Spirit planes at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport and empty counters at Atlanta's airport.
Spirit, known for its discount fares, had operated hundreds of daily flights on its yellow planes. The airline had filed for bankruptcy twice before this shutdown. One traveler quoted in The New York Times said, "Even if they go back into business, never again," after being stranded.
