Spotify released a new desktop app called Studio by Spotify Labs that creates podcasts based on user information. The app generates audio briefings from email, calendar entries, and other personal data. Users can enter multistep requests such as creating a daily audio brief for a road trip that incorporates calendar details, recommends dinner locations, and ends with a podcast suggestion.

All generated podcasts are saved in the user's Spotify library and remain private.

The company is distributing the app in research preview to more than 20 markets. Access is limited to select users who are 18 years or older. Spotify stated that the tool is an early preview and that AI-generated content can contain errors or unreliable information.

The app competes with Google's NotebookLM, which popularized podcast generation from selected source material several years ago. Google later added a feature that creates daily podcasts from its Discover feed. Spotify previously released a command-line tool that lets users of coding assistants create personal podcasts. The new desktop app extends similar capabilities to non-coders.
