New York Mets left fielder Juan Soto and center fielder A.J. Ewing committed errors on a sinking line drive in the first inning. Toronto Blue Jays designated hitter George Springer scored from first base on the misplay.
winnipegfreepress.comToronto Blue Jays designated hitter George Springer scored from first base on a misplayed sinking line drive in the bottom of the first inning Monday night against the New York Mets. Springer looped a ball to left field against Mets pitcher Sean Manaea. The ball bounced in front of left fielder Juan Soto, who reached for it but missed as it took a bounce.
The ball rolled to the wall. Center fielder A.J. Ewing moved over to field it behind Soto, but the ball slipped out of his glove and rolled back to the fence. Soto retrieved the ball, yet Springer had already rounded third and crossed home plate.
Springer received credit for a triple and one base on an error. The play was Ewing's second error of the season. Shortstop Francisco Lindor committed an error later in the game. "It just took a weird hop on me and bounced a little different," Soto said.
"I thought I had a chance and then it just kept dying. " Interim Mets manager Andy Green said Soto played the ball aggressively but was beaten by a turf bounce. "I think every single time I've come to Toronto I've seen that particular play," Green said.
"Not necessarily the finish of that play. " The Mets committed 56 errors this season, third-most in MLB behind the Washington Nationals and San Francisco Giants. New York lost the game 2-1 and fell to a 35-50 record.
Blue Jays pitcher Trey Yesavage said Springer was out of breath for the next three innings after the play. Springer said he remained out of breath for nine innings. "Had to get this old body ready to run a little bit faster, but it's all good," Springer said.
The game took place in Toronto. Juan Soto is the highest-paid player in Mets history. The Mets are in last place.
