Wembanyama returned to the lineup for Game 5 after escaping suspension for his ejection in Game 4 on May 10, 2026. He had received a Flagrant 2 foul for elbowing Naz Reid in the throat. Naz Reid received a technical foul for pushing Wembanyama in the back on a Minnesota free throw with 2:24 left in the first half of Game 5.
Wembanyama scored 18 points in the first quarter of Game 5, going 6 for 8 from the field and 2 for 3 on three-pointers. He scored 16 of the Spurs’ first 24 points as San Antonio led 24-9 at the 6:17 mark of the first quarter. Naz Reid made a driving layup with 23 seconds left in the first quarter to trim the deficit to 34-30.
They led by as many as 18 points in the second quarter before settling for a 12-point advantage at halftime. Wembanyama had a double-double by halftime with 21 points and 11 rebounds while De’Aaron Fox scored 12 points in the first half.
Keldon Johnson scored 21 points for the Spurs. De’Aaron Fox finished with 18 points, Stephon Castle scored 17 and Devin Vassell added 12. Dylan Harper scored 12 points and grabbed 10 rebounds.
Anthony Edwards led the Timberwolves with 20 points. Julius Randle, Jaden McDaniels and Naz Reid each scored 12 or 17 points. The Spurs held the Timberwolves under 100 points for the fifth time in 10 games this postseason.
The Timberwolves opened the third quarter on a 14-2 run to tie the game at 61-61. The Spurs scored 30 of the final 42 points of the third quarter to lead 91-73 entering the fourth. They led by 20 points early in the fourth quarter.
