State Fair on National Mall Draws Sparse Crowds and Faces Power Outages

The Great American State Fair began its 16-day run on the National Mall in Washington this week. Multiple outlets reported that opening-day crowds were relatively sparse compared with past National Mall events. Power outages affected some attractions, including melted ice cream, disruptions to the 110-foot Ferris wheel and the shutdown of the West Virginia booth due to air conditioning problems.

A Freedom 250 spokesperson told The Washington Post the fair experienced power hiccups.

Booths representing all 50 U.S. states are featured, though not all will be staffed throughout the event. Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, North Carolina, Oregon and Pennsylvania opted out of sending official representatives, citing budget constraints or scheduling issues.

North Carolina's privately sponsored exhibit drew attention after an unapproved image of the Confederate flag appeared. A spokesperson for the North Carolina booth told Spectrum News that the governor's office demanded organizers stop displaying the image.

Friday's installment closed hours early due to rain.

The National Weather Service forecast likely showers and a possible thunderstorm after 4 p.m. EDT on Saturday. Programming includes rodeo and music performances, movie screenings, photo opportunities and food vendors. The event is free to the public and scheduled to continue through July 10.
