State fair on National Mall opens with power outage and empty exhibits

A power outage hit the food hall at the state fair on the National Mall on Thursday, leaving frozen desserts melted in the summer heat. Service workers stood behind mostly vacant stalls, according to video shared by a local reporter. Only one food stall operated on the opening day the previous day.

Cashiers informed visitors that alcohol would not be served. Organizers stated that beverage options vary by venue. A Wednesday press release described food as a unifying element of American experience and said the fair would highlight farmers, producers, and communities.

Exhibits and attendance Booths representing Connecticut, Maine, and Hawaii each held only two chairs. Alaska’s display showed a rug and a small table. Visitors watched a rodeo and rode a Ferris wheel while some sought shade under a model of a proposed 250-foot arch.

The fair runs through July 10 as part of nationwide events marking the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. It is organized by a public-private partnership. Several musical acts and multiple states withdrew before opening, citing the event’s political nature.

A lengthy speech opened the event on Wednesday. The speaker stated that America is respected and no longer a subject of laughter. Another administration member referred to people who had withdrawn from the event using a derogatory term. A country music performer sang the national anthem during the ceremony.
