State fair postponed after heat-related medical emergencies during anniversary events

The Great American State Fair closed early Friday after multiple people required onsite medical attention for heat-related illness during events marking America's 250th anniversary. The fair reopened later that evening but was postponed again on Saturday.

Attendees who had traveled to Washington, D.C., described their plans to wait out the heat at nearby museums and use public transit until the fair resumed. Whitney Thomas, a mother from North Carolina, said her family had enjoyed the fair Thursday evening and planned to continue visiting sites while conditions improved.

Attendee reactions Brad Shultis, a retired Marine from Virginia, questioned the decision to halt the event, stating that visitors who found conditions too hot could stay home rather than require a mass closure. Wendy Lamb, who traveled eight hours from Connecticut with family members to support a state booth, said organizers likely acted to prevent visitors from suffering in the extreme heat.

Pat Lamb described the emotional impact of seeing the U.S. Capitol and Rotunda despite the weather disruption, noting the group's plan to move between air-conditioned locations until the fairgrounds reopened. Officials said the closures followed established severe weather protocols intended to prevent mass casualty medical events.

Control and Prevention states that extreme heat can impair the body's cooling ability, causing internal temperatures to rise faster than they can dissipate. Symptoms can progress from heat exhaustion, marked by heavy sweating, dizziness, nausea and fainting, to heat stroke when core body temperatures reach 103°F or higher.

Public health officials advise seeking shade, staying hydrated, and identifying air-conditioned cooling centers when exposed to high temperatures. Anyone showing signs such as confusion, slurred speech or loss of consciousness should receive immediate medical treatment.
