Stephen Curry said a potential late-career pairing with LeBron James would create a unique story in NBA and sports history. He added that the idea had seemed unrealistic until two or three years ago. Curry spoke Thursday at the Edgewood Tahoe golf course in Nevada while competing in the American Century Championship.
He called any detailed discussion of the topic premature and said he had no percentage estimate of the chances James would join the Warriors. League sources confirmed Curry and James exchanged text messages in the past week. Draymond Green, Curry's longtime teammate, was vacationing with James in Puerto Rico and was seen golfing with him on July 9.
Curry described the Warriors' pitch to James as an opportunity to play good basketball with people who know the game. He said the team is an organization that has been there and that the decision rests on where James sees himself fitting. The Warriors re-signed Kristaps Porzingis, Al Horford and De'Anthony Melton in free agency.
They also signed Charles Bassey to a one-year contract on July 9 after losing reserve center Quinten Post to Memphis. Curry noted that Jimmy Butler and Moses Moody will miss a significant portion of the season due to injuries. Curry said it remains to be determined whether he would be comfortable if the roster stays stable and James does not join.
