Golden State missed the playoffs for the second time in three years, earning the 10th seed in the Western Conference before losing in the play-in tournament at Phoenix. The Warriors finished the season 37-45 while dealing with numerous injuries, including a season-ending right knee injury to Jimmy Butler in January and Stephen Curry’s 27-game absence with his own right knee injury.
Kerr shared an embrace with Curry and Draymond Green near the end of the loss in Phoenix. He said afterward that he knew it could be their final time together on the court. Green had predicted on his podcast after the season that Kerr would not return.
12-year coaching run with the Warriors has featured four championships and a stretch of six straight NBA Finals appearances alongside Curry and Green. He got his first coaching job in 2014-15 and immediately guided Golden State to the franchise’s first title in 40 years.
The following season, the Warriors began with a record 24-0 start under assistant Luke Walton while Kerr missed the initial 43 games recovering from complications following two back surgeries. He later missed additional time in 2017 when Mike Brown filled in as Kerr underwent a procedure for a spinal fluid leak.
Throughout his coaching career, Kerr has used his platform to speak out against gun violence and social injustice. In March 2018, Kerr participated in the Oakland March for Our Lives. Earlier that month, he joined Democratic Congressmen Ro Khanna and Mike Thompson at a town hall at Newark Memorial High School to discuss gun violence in schools.
>"I think in some ways the balance is presented to us, given what’s happening around the country. " — Steve Kerr (The Boston Globe) The Warriors issued no immediate comment on the contract agreement Saturday night. The pact keeps Kerr in place as the franchise looks to rebound from a injury-plagued season and retool around its veteran core for the upcoming campaign.
