Storms Clear Wildfire Smoke Across Ohio Valley to Northeast While Triggering Tornado Watches

Severe thunderstorms and tornado watches covered the Ohio Valley through the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast on July 18, 2026. Watches remained active over Chicago, Ithaca, Cleveland and Pittsburgh, with forecasters warning that EF-2 tornadoes remained possible until 9 p.m. local time.

Faced damaging winds, large hail, isolated tornadoes and flash flooding. Hazy skies and air-quality readings in the Orange and Red ranges persisted across much of the Mid-Atlantic until the storms arrived in mid-afternoon. Heavy smoke from wildfires in Canada and Minnesota had already reached at least 19 states during the week.

Rain continued through the night of July 18 and pushed the smoke eastward while lowering temperatures into the mid- or high-80s on July 19. The New Jersey Department of Health recorded 71 visits to emergency departments and urgent-care centers on July 18 for asthma or asthma-like symptoms, a total within normal daily ranges before the smoke arrived.

Tens of thousands of fans gathered in New Jersey on July 19 for the World Cup final between Spain and Argentina.

Farther south, two feet of rain in recent days left rivers high and roads impassable in central Texas. The Texas National Guard conducted aerial rescues and medical transports as recovery continued.
