Severe thunderstorms in Georgia triggered a Federal Aviation Administration ground stop at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport on Sunday, halting arrivals and departures for several hours. The storms formed when a cold front moving south met warm, moist air from the Gulf Coast, producing lightning, strong winds, and heavy rain across much of the South.
FAA flight-tracking data showed 2,626 flights delayed and 156 canceled nationwide. Atlanta recorded 313 delays and 54 cancellations, the highest totals among U.S. airports. JFK reported 139 delays and 26 cancellations. Philadelphia, Boston, Denver, and San Diego also experienced disruptions. Southwest, American, and Delta each recorded hundreds of delays.
Passengers described extended waits and diverted flights.
One traveler reported being diverted to another state after the aircraft ran low on fuel. Another group scheduled to reach Miami at 11:20 a.m. remained in Atlanta past 7 p.m. after multiple standby attempts and schedule changes.
