Historian Hans Beck argues that Sparta developed from an older Lakedaimonian cultural setting rather than arising solely as a warrior state created by conquest. His study was published in The Annual of the British School at Athens and reported by Cover Media.

C. C. the Spartans suffered a decisive defeat to the Thebans at the Battle of Leuctra. Beck draws on excavations at the site of Aghios Vasileios.

Archaeologists there uncovered a palace complex, frescoes, bronze swords and administrative records written in Linear B, the oldest known written form of Greek. A major sanctuary at nearby Amyklai stayed active after the palace collapsed and later served both Spartans and Lakedaimonians. “The rise of Sparta deeply altered the picture,” Beck wrote.

Beck, a professor at the University of Münster, said the continued ritual activity at Amyklai shows that older Lakedaimonian traditions persisted as Sparta took shape. The study does not question Sparta’s later military power but challenges the idea that its origins were only a story of conquest. The findings coincide with other recent discoveries in Greece.

Earlier in 2026 officials announced the recovery of what may be the oldest wooden tools yet found, dating back hundreds of thousands of years, in the Megalopolis basin on the Peloponnese peninsula. A German teenager also found an ancient Greek coin in Berlin, the first such discovery recorded there.
