Study Examines T Cells in Lupus Nephritis Patients

A study of T cells from patients with lupus nephritis found these cells are activated by local cytokines and may contribute to kidney injury. Some T cells showed reactivity to Epstein-Barr virus and cytomegalovirus. The research examined T cells collected from affected kidneys. Investigators observed that local cytokine signals triggered cell activation within inflamed tissue.

A subset of the T cells responded to viral proteins associated with Epstein-Barr virus and cytomegalovirus. The study noted these viruses can remain latent in patients. The findings link immune cell behavior inside the kidney to both local inflammation and potential viral triggers. Further work is needed to determine whether these T cells directly damage kidney tissue.
