New research presented at a medical conference found adults using GLP-1 medications for weight loss decreased physical activity levels. Average daily steps fell and moderate-to-vigorous exercise minutes declined after starting treatment.
Fox NewsAdults using GLP-1 weight loss medications reduced daily steps and exercise minutes after beginning treatment, according to research scheduled for presentation this week. The study examined data from 753 people with obesity who started GLP-1 drugs such as semaglutide and tirzepatide. Researchers linked participant records from a National Institutes of Health program with fitness tracker data.
Average daily steps dropped from 5,047 before treatment to 4,487 afterward. Moderate-to-vigorous physical activity decreased from 28 minutes per day to 22 minutes per day. Largest activity declines occurred among men and participants reporting joint or muscle pain. Age, heart failure, and prior stroke showed no effect on results.
Study lead Sajana Maharjan stated physical activity is essential for preserving strength and long-term health while taking these medications. "The findings in our study reinforce that exercise cannot be optional for people taking these medications," Maharjan said.
A hormone and weight-loss specialist noted calorie deficits can lower metabolic rate and medication side effects such as fatigue may reduce motivation for activity. The specialist advised resistance training and daily movement to preserve muscle mass during weight loss.
The study was retrospective and observational, showing association rather than causation. Most participants were middle-aged women, which may limit applicability to other groups.
