Study Maps Over 88,000 Genetic Links to Metabolic Traits

An analysis of genetic and metabolic data from the Estonian Biobank and the UK Biobank identified more than 88,000 associations between more than 8,000 genomic regions and metabolic traits. The study, published in Nature, examined circulating metabolic traits across 619,372 individuals. It was led by Tambets and colleagues.

Data came from two established population biobanks that collect genetic and health information. The analysis focused on genetic variants linked to measurable substances in blood. Researchers compared findings with earlier studies on genetic influences on metabolism. The work builds on prior publications that examined smaller sample sizes.
