Subway closed 729 restaurants in the United States in 2025, marking the 10th consecutive year of reductions in its domestic footprint. The chain, which remains the largest fast-food operator in the US by number of locations, now has 18,773 outlets, all operated by franchisees.

A Subway spokesperson stated that the closures align with a strategy to position restaurants in optimal locations for long-term franchisee success, emphasizing real estate, visibility, and operations. Subway did not respond to requests for additional comment on the matter.

The company's US presence has significantly contracted over the past decade, down from more than 27,000 stores in 2015 after closing over 8,000 locations since then. In comparison, McDonald's operates nearly 14,000 restaurants across the country.

Private equity firm Roark Capital acquired Subway in 2024 for approximately $9.6 billion. Following the acquisition, the company appointed Jonathan Fitzpatrick as its new CEO in July 2025. Fitzpatrick previously held leadership roles at Burger King.

Subway has introduced affordability measures to attract customers amid inflation pressures, similar to efforts by other fast-food chains. In April, the chain launched its first value menu with 15 items priced under $5, including $4.99 six-inch subs, echoing its former $5 Footlong promotion that ended in 2014.

McDonald's has offered value options such as Meal Deal combos and an Under $3 menu featuring items like a Sausage McMuffin or 4-Piece Chicken McNuggets. While focusing on US optimizations, Subway added more than 1,000 new locations globally in 2025.

The chain operates over 35,000 restaurants worldwide, including in Europe, the Middle East, and Asia, with plans to open 12,000 more in the coming years.
