Sudan has declared a new cholera outbreak in West Kordofan state, the country's Ministry of Health reported Monday. As of June 20, officials recorded 117 deaths, seven confirmed cases, and 838 suspected cases. The announcement comes less than four months after the country declared an end to an earlier outbreak that began in July 2024, spread to all 18 states, infected more than 124,000 people, and killed 3,573.
Cholera is an acute intestinal infection that causes severe diarrhea and dehydration. It spreads through food or water contaminated with the Vibrio cholerae bacteria. The current outbreak is occurring amid ongoing civil war that has lasted three years, killed tens of thousands, and displaced millions, according to Human Rights Watch.
The conflict has disrupted health services and complicated efforts to deploy response teams.
It is also coordinating the delivery and installation of handwashing stations. The last confirmed case from the previous outbreak was reported on January 14.
