Support for Israel Declines Among Young U.S. Evangelicals

Surveys conducted in 2021 found that 33.6 percent of U.S. evangelicals under age 30 expressed support for Israel. The same poll showed that 21 percent of respondents held premillennialist beliefs, down from 65 percent recorded in a 2011 National Association of Evangelicals survey.

Research and Institute for Middle East Understanding polls indicate reduced backing for Israel among young conservatives and Christians overall. A 2021 study by scholars Motti Inbari and Kirill Bumin linked the shift to changing interpretations of biblical prophecy.

Christian Zionism centers on the view that support for Israel fulfills religious obligations tied to the return of Jesus Christ. Some adherents also regard Israel as a strategic ally of the United States.

Jazeera examined financial records of 36 organizations whose leaders were listed among Israel’s top Christian allies. Combined annual revenues for these groups reached $2.8 billion. The lobbying arm of Christians United for Israel reported more than $670,000 in lobbying expenditures aimed at strengthening sanctions on Iran.

The organization has also supported funding measures for Israel. Reverend Fares Abraham stated that Christian Zionism remains highly organized and allied with other groups, giving it structural durability despite shifts in public opinion.
