Supreme Court Allows End to Temporary Protected Status for Hundreds of Thousands

The Supreme Court ruled Thursday that the administration has authority to end temporary protected status for hundreds of thousands of migrants from Haiti, Syria and other countries. The decision also upheld limits on asylum claims at the border. The rulings come as U.S. birthrates remain at record lows and net migration is projected to drop sharply.

Census Bureau figures show 710,000 fewer babies were born last year than two decades ago.

Bier of the Cato Institute said most U.S. counties already record more deaths than births. He added that without continued immigration the number of workers paying into Social Security will fall faster and some schools will close. William Frey of the Brookings Institution said states such as Iowa, Kansas and Nebraska rely on immigration for any population growth.

Census data indicate the total number of residents under age 25 is already declining nationwide.

Stephen Miller, White House deputy chief of staff for policy, said the rulings represent a victory and that ending birthright citizenship is the next priority. The Census Bureau estimates that sustained low migration could produce a net population loss exceeding 107 million people by the end of the century.
