Supreme Court Faces Deadline on Mifepristone Mail-Order Case
The Supreme Court is expected to take further action by the end of May 12, 2026 in a case involving mail orders of mifepristone, the abortion medication. A federal appeals court had ruled to stop such mail orders. The outcome could affect FDA regulatory authority over drug dispensing rules.
cnbc.comThe Supreme Court is expected to take further steps by the end of today in a case concerning mail orders of mifepristone, the abortion medication, after it issued a week-long pause on a federal appeals court decision to halt those orders. The case centers on the FDA's 2023 decision to remove the requirement that mifepristone be dispensed only in person.
States hold authority to regulate abortion, but the FDA regulates drugs. The ruling could influence the agency's broader regulatory power as well as abortion providers and patients.
President Trump has signed off on a plan to dismiss the FDA commissioner, according to multiple reports on May 9, 2026. The commissioner had served in the role for a little over a year. The commissioner was scheduled to give an address at an annual 5K race and run with staff on May 9 but did not appear, two agency sources told STAT. The plans to remove the commissioner could still change.
A study published on May 9, 2026 in JAMA Network Open found that people with premenstrual syndrome or premenstrual dysphoric disorder are more likely to have psychiatric disorders, and vice versa. Researchers examined records from a Swedish registry of more than 3.6 million women between 2001 and 2022.
About 105,000 people had diagnoses of premenstrual disorders. Among them, 48 percent had a previous psychiatric diagnosis, compared with nearly 30 percent of matched controls. In the other direction, 37 percent of those with psychiatric diagnoses later received a premenstrual disorder diagnosis, versus 21 percent of those without.
The associations were strongest for depression and anxiety but were also present for ADHD, bipolar disorder and personality disorders. The researchers matched individuals with premenstrual disorders to their unaffected biological sisters as well as to 10 additional unaffected controls.
Previous studies had suggested links but were smaller with shorter follow-up periods.
Researchers in France and Spain have diagnosed dermatophilosis, a bacterial skin disease usually seen in livestock, in more than 25 men who have sex with men across Europe who reported no known exposure to affected animals. The condition produces a rash and is sometimes known as rain rot.
The cases are reminiscent of the 2022 emergence of mpox among gay men, though this disease has so far been milder. One former CDC HIV prevention leader said the key question is what the pattern means in clinical practice.
A state program will provide 400 diapers to some families upon discharge from the hospital after birth, an amount that covers roughly one month's supply for an average infant. The initiative will begin in the next fiscal year at 65 to 75 hospitals serving low-income patients, which account for a quarter of births in the state. The state becomes the third to offer such a free diaper program.
