Supreme Court to Issue Final Rulings on Birthright Citizenship and Two Other Cases

The U.S. Supreme Court is scheduled to release its final rulings of the nine-month term on Tuesday, June 30, before beginning its summer recess. Three cases are still pending. One involves an effort to limit birthright citizenship, another concerns state laws restricting transgender athletes in school sports, and the third addresses federal limits on coordinated spending between political parties and candidates.

The court is expected to rule on whether the administration can restrict citizenship for children born in the United States to parents who are not citizens or legal residents. Lower courts have blocked the policy, citing the 14th Amendment. A decision in favor of the administration would alter long-standing interpretations of citizenship under that amendment.

The justices are also considering challenges to laws in Idaho and West Virginia that bar transgender athletes from competing on female teams in public schools and universities. During arguments, some justices indicated support for the states' position that the laws protect competitive fairness in women's sports.

In the third case, the court is reviewing a challenge to federal caps on how much political parties may spend in coordination with candidates. A lower court upheld the limits. Several justices have signaled they may view the caps as restrictions on protected speech under the First Amendment.
