Survey: One Third of Britons Wait Six Months or Longer to Check Cancer Symptoms; 43 % Do Not Return After First GP Visit

GB News reported that research conducted by Cancer Research UK found approximately one third of Britons who experience potential warning signs of cancer fail to seek medical attention for at least half a year. The survey gathered responses from 6,844 individuals across Britain. It showed 32 per cent had noticed a concerning symptom but failed to have it examined within six months.

Fifty-three per cent believed securing a GP appointment would prove difficult, and 37 per cent said they had too many competing concerns demanding their attention. Forty-three per cent of those who visited their doctor chose not to return if symptoms persisted after the initial consultation.

Cancer Research UK established a partnership with Tesco to train pharmacists across 350 supermarket locations in England, Scotland and Wales.

The initiative allows shoppers to discuss health concerns without arranging a formal appointment. " He added that the partnership makes it easier for people to have health conversations in a private setting without needing to book an appointment. " She continued that the partnership supports early diagnosis by making it easier for people to talk to a professional about any concerns, which the charity hopes will save lives.

The programme has already shown results in the case of Carlton Hayman, a 67-year-old grocery assistant at a Tesco store in Coventry. Hayman began experiencing difficulty swallowing in 2024, consulted Nik Thakrar, the store's pharmacy manager, after a shift, and was referred by his GP for an endoscopy that led to a diagnosis of oesophageal cancer.

Oesophageal cancer affects roughly 10,000 Britons annually and causes 8,000 deaths.
