Cole Tomas Allen, a 31-year-old teacher from Torrance, California, is set for arraignment in federal court in Washington on charges related to the April 25 assassination attempt on President Donald Trump at the White House Correspondents' Dinner. Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche stated that expected charges include assault of a federal officer and discharging a firearm during the assault.

Allen allegedly charged a security checkpoint at the Washington Hilton Hotel, armed with a shotgun, handgun and knife, while the event was underway.

Gunshots rang out outside the ballroom, prompting the evacuation of President Trump, Vice President JD Vance and other officials. One Secret Service agent was shot but sustained non-serious injuries due to protective gear, according to Trump. The Secret Service neutralized the threat, and Allen was arrested.

This marks the third assassination attempt on Trump in under two years, following two prior incidents and the murder of conservative activist Charlie Kirk seven months ago. FBI Director Kash Patel noted that the event hosted the president, vice president, much of the cabinet and about 2,000 media members.

He described the scenario as unprecedented and confirmed the FBI's Behavioral Analysis Unit is examining Allen's emails, social media and interviews to determine motives.

In the letter, first reported by The New York Post, he stated that Trump administration officials were targets, prioritized from highest-ranking to lowest, but spared FBI Director Kash Patel. The letter included a rant about security incompetence, noting he entered with weapons undetected because measures focused on external protesters rather than prior check-ins.

" A manifesto attributed to Allen claimed he acted to prevent a "pedophile, rapist, and traitor" from continuing crimes, echoing rhetoric used by some Democrats and media outlets, according to USA Today.

Trump responded with composure, stating afterward that he leads a normal but dangerous life for the country's sake. He called for unity and bipartisan healing following the incident. First Lady Melania Trump criticized late-night host Jimmy Kimmel for a monologue aired two days before the shooting, in which he joked about her as an "expectant widow" and referenced Jeffrey Epstein.

She posted on X that Kimmel's rhetoric was hateful and violent, urging ABC to take action.

Kimmel’s hateful and violent rhetoric is intended to divide our country. His monologue about my family isn’t comedy- his words are corrosive and deepens the political sickness within America.

Former President Barack Obama praised the Secret Service but suggested motives were unclear, despite the manifesto. ABC journalist Jonathan Karl recounted receiving a call from Trump checking on his well-being after the attempt.

The incident has raised questions about Secret Service protocols. Patel indicated adjustments are underway to improve posture for future events. Erika Kirk, widow of the slain Charlie Kirk, was present and evacuated. Sources noted the political climate, with high-profile conservatives targeted recently.

Trump expressed interest in rescheduling a similar event within the next month, planning a speech focused on love and unity.
