A suspected drug trafficker who survived a plane crash off the Florida coast last week was arrested and accused of carrying roughly $30,000 in a bag labeled with the name of a Bahamian politician. The man, previously deported after convictions for drug and money laundering offenses, is accused of arranging a shipment of about 1,000 kilograms of cocaine through the Bahamas.

A court document filed May 14 in the Southern District of New York states he met an unnamed politician at the Bahamian Parliament in October 2024 to discuss security for the shipment.

Allegations and Government Response U.S.

Drug Enforcement Administration Special Agent Michael Coleman said in a deposition that the suspect owns a business used to bid on government construction contracts and launder narcotics proceeds. Coleman also stated that multiple trafficking organizations operate under protection from local officials.

Bahamian opposition leaders called for an investigation. Michael Pintard, leader of the Free National Movement party, said he does not believe the current government will hold anyone accountable. Dr. Duane Sands, chairman of the same party, told The Nassau Guardian that a commission of inquiry is needed.

The office of the Bahamian prime minister stated it is taking the matter extremely seriously. U.S. officials, adding that the government has received no official information identifying any public official.

The pilot, Ian Nixon, told CBS News he lost both engines, navigation, and all radios before the aircraft went down. He said he had never experienced a similar situation in more than 25 years of flying. Eleven people survived the crash, which occurred late last week off Melbourne, Florida. The suspect was among those rescued and later arrested.
