vanguardngr.comAt least 20 people were killed and scores injured when suspected Lakurawa insurgents attacked Fasken Rafi village in the Arewa Local Government Area of Kebbi State on Sunday. The attack was described by residents as one of the deadliest and most coordinated incidents in the region in recent times. Injured villagers are receiving medical treatment.
State officials confirmed the deaths and dispatched a delegation led by the deputy governor to the village. The delegation assessed the security situation and met with affected families. The deputy governor stated that the administration would deploy additional security personnel and resources to the area to prevent further attacks.
The attack occurred days after the Emir of Argungu urged residents to obtain legal firearm permits for community self-defense. The emir said communities should pool resources to buy approved weapons and warned that attackers should know villages can defend themselves.
The emir clarified that the call was limited to lawful self-defense and did not endorse extrajudicial actions or targeting of any group. The Kebbi State Police Public Relations Officer did not respond to requests for comment. The incident has increased public concern over security in remote border communities despite ongoing military and police operations.
