Swedish Parliament Ends Permanent Residence Permits for Asylum Seekers
The Swedish Parliament passed legislation ending permanent residence permits for asylum seekers and specified immigrant groups. The change takes effect July 12 and replaces permanent status with temporary permits for new applicants.
focustaiwan.twThe Swedish Parliament passed a government bill ending permanent residence permits for asylum seekers and other specified immigrant groups. The measure takes effect July 12 and limits new recipients to temporary residence permits. Current holders of permanent residence permits retain their status under the new rules.
The legislation prevents conversion of temporary permits into permanent ones for the affected groups.
Background on the Policy Shift Temporary permits have been standard practice in Sweden in recent years. The new law extends that approach by barring specified groups from obtaining permanent status. The change occurs amid public and political concern over violence linked to criminal networks and costs associated with immigration.
Official police data published in May reported 23 non-gang members killed and 30 injured in shootings tied to organized crime over the past three years. The Swedish Migration Agency recently revoked permanent residence permits for 11 individuals with reported connections to criminal networks who had spent extended periods outside the country.
Those individuals lost access to the national welfare system and face travel and business restrictions within the Schengen zone. Austrian MEP Harald Vilimsky cited data from the Danish Ministry of Finance and the White Papers Policy Institute estimating that Sweden will spend approximately 117.3 billion euros on 102,000 Somalis living in Sweden over the next 50 years.
