Syria Postpones First Transitional Parliament Session

Syrian authorities postponed the first session of the transitional parliament that had been scheduled for Monday. State television reported on Sunday that the meeting would be held on a date to be determined later. The parliament was formed after the previous legislature was dissolved following the removal of longtime ruler Bashar al-Assad in December 2024.

A temporary constitution signed in March 2025 set a five-year transitional period.

Local committees appointed by an electoral commission began selecting two-thirds of the 210 members in October. The remaining third were appointed this week by the president. Druze-majority Suwayda province has not yet named its members after last year's sectarian violence.

The selection process was completed earlier this year in formerly Kurdish-run areas of the north and northeast after authorities in Damascus assumed control and signed an integration agreement. The parliament will serve a 30-month term focused on drafting a new elections law and preparing for a popular vote, according to the head of the electoral committee.
