It remains unclear whether any Taco Bell customers have contracted the illness. Nearly 2,000 people across the United States have fallen ill in the current outbreak, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Michigan has recorded 992 cases, compared with its typical annual total of roughly 50, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services said. New York City has confirmed 301 cases in 2026 so far, including 273 since May 1, the city’s Health Department reported. Cyclosporiasis is an intestinal illness caused by the Cyclospora parasite.

Symptoms include watery diarrhea, frequent and sometimes explosive bowel movements, stomach cramps, nausea, bloating, fatigue, loss of appetite and weight loss, and they may last a month or longer, the CDC stated. Health officials are investigating outbreaks in Ohio, North Carolina, Illinois, Colorado, Texas, Florida and Connecticut. The source of the contamination has not been identified.

Officials recommend washing fresh produce, cleaning kitchen surfaces and cooking raw produce when possible.
