Taiwan Officials Continue Arms Requests After Trump-Xi Meeting

U.S. arms deliveries while expanding self-defense programs and critical infrastructure projects. Luo Wen-jia, secretary-general of the Straits Exchange Foundation, told visiting journalists on Monday that Taiwan will neither provoke China nor allow it to overrun the island. He said Taiwan must adjust its national defense posture while considering its geography and the risks that could arise.

President Trump said after the meeting that he was unsure whether he would approve a $14 billion arms package for Taiwan. He noted that the weapons might not change outcomes given China's size and proximity to the island. U.S. arms sales remain part of security commitments under the Taiwan Relations Act and contribute to collective deterrence.

The ministry described China's military threat as the main source of regional instability.

Taiwan's military began live-fire beach defense drills ahead of the Trump-Xi summit. The People's Liberation Army encircled the island in 2025 and entered its air defense identification zone more than 3,000 times in 2024. Tsung-Yi Tang of civil-defense organization Kuma Academy said Taiwan maintains a high degree of sensitivity to Chinese military and information operations but continues daily operations without panic.
