Taiwan opposition leader says Xi Jinping wants peaceful cross-strait relations

Kuomintang Chairwoman Cheng Li-wun said Friday that Chinese leader Xi Jinping wants to handle relations with Taiwan through peaceful means. She spoke to American reporters at the Jefferson Hotel in Washington after a two-week U.S. visit that included meetings with members of Congress and President Donald Trump’s allies.
Cheng said Xi was “very gentle and very nice and very real” during their April meeting on the mainland. That stance aligns with the 1992 consensus that once guided talks between Taipei and Beijing.
Cheng criticized the Democratic Progressive Party for promoting a “two-state theory” that she said ended cross-strait dialogue. ”
