france24.comTanzanian and Kenyan officials witnessed the signing of eight Memoranda of Understanding and bilateral agreements during high-level talks held in Dar es Salaam. The documents focus on deepening diplomatic and economic relations to support progress in infrastructure, trade and institutional collaboration between the two nations.
The agreements cover several strategic sectors. Officials committed to enhance cooperation in the development and management of railway systems to improve the movement of people and goods and increase trade efficiency within the East African Community.
In agriculture, the countries agreed to strengthen collaboration to boost production, improve food security and develop agricultural value chains. Coordination in this area, if supported by investments in technology and infrastructure, could increase joint agricultural output by over 20 percent in the medium term, according to policy analysts cited in official statements.
The two sides also agreed to improve shipping services and port operations, with emphasis on the Port of Dar es Salaam and the Port of Mombasa, which function as primary trade gateways for the East African region. Separately, officials signed an agreement to conduct a feasibility study for a natural gas pipeline linking Dar es Salaam to Mombasa, a project expected to expand access to affordable energy and deepen cooperation on energy resources.
In security and rule of law, the agreements include enhanced mutual legal assistance in criminal matters to address cross-border crime. Additional pacts aim to harmonize product standards and quality assurance measures, which are intended to reduce trade barriers and ensure goods meet common market benchmarks.
Other agreements focus on institutional strengthening through training, skills development and exchange programs for public servants. These measures are designed to improve public sector efficiency and service delivery. The set of agreements reflects coordinated efforts to build an integrated economy based on aligned infrastructure, policy coordination and resource governance across the East African region.
