Taylor Fritz lost to Alexander Zverev 6-4, 6-4, 6-2 in the Wimbledon quarterfinals on Wednesday after knee tendinitis began bothering him three games into the match. Fritz, the last American man remaining in the singles draw, said the pain started suddenly and left him uncertain how to proceed.
He took a medical timeout in the second set for treatment on his right knee but could not convert any of his four break-point opportunities.
Fritz's injury Fritz had dealt with knee tendinitis before and reached the 2024 U.S. Open final after defeating Zverev in the quarterfinals. He reported no prior signs of the issue at this year's tournament aside from minor discomfort at the end of his fourth-round win over Alexander Bublik.
"I expected, after a light day yesterday, to feel fine today," Fritz said. "Felt like my warmup was great.
Fritz noted that Zverev's serving would have been difficult to overcome even without the knee problem. "He's going to be extremely tough to beat the way he's serving," Fritz said. "I don't want to take away from how well he's playing. I'm just really sad that I didn't get the chance to, like, get into it, I guess."
