Taylor Swift paid more than $160,000 to cover the permit and related response costs for her wedding at Madison Square Garden, New York Post reported. Mayor Zohran Mamdani disclosed the payment during an unrelated press conference on Friday. The singer, 36, married NFL player Travis Kelce at the arena last week.
The couple used the venue's digital signs to announce the marriage. The nuptials featured a Thursday rehearsal dinner and a July 3 reception that ran into the early hours of Saturday. Roughly 130 NYPD officers were stationed outside the arena each day of the event, with hundreds present overall.
Former NYPD chief of department Rodney Harrison compared the security measures, including road closures, to those for a presidential visit. New York Post reported that Swift's wedding is estimated to have cost $30 million or more, including roughly $5 million on florals and decor. Her net worth is estimated at $2 billion.
NYPD Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch previously told the City Council that the department expected to spend $92 million on police overtime and extra equipment this summer for major events. Detectives' Endowment Association president Scott Munro stated that about 5,000 detectives have each worked 85 hours of overtime in the past month.
The NYPD and City Hall did not immediately return requests for comment on whether Swift covered any police overtime or security costs beyond the permit fee.
