The team lost 3-2 to Turkey on Thursday after conceding a goal in the 98th minute. The result had no effect on group standings because the squad had already clinched first place.
The team scored first through Auston Trusty in the second minute but trailed 2-1 at halftime. Sebastian Berhalter equalized in the 49th minute before Kaan Ayhan scored the winner. Christian Pulisic entered in the 58th minute after missing the previous four halves with a calf injury. He struck the post in the 63rd minute and forced a save later in the match.
The team will play Bosnia and Herzegovina on July 1 in Santa Clara, California. Bosnia finished third in Group B. Midfielder Brendan Aaronson said the coach’s decision to start several new players showed confidence in the squad. Coach Mauricio Pochettino stated after the match that the group-stage results had not altered the team’s momentum.
