Team places right-hander on injured list with ankle issue

The team placed its right-handed pitcher on the 15-day injured list Sunday with an ankle injury the pitcher has been dealing with for most of the season. A team official said the pitcher was trying to pitch through what is being called right ankle posterior impingement.

The injury affected the pitcher's mechanics after the player compensated for the issue. The pitcher lost all three June starts and posted a 9.88 ERA, including allowing seven hits and six runs in four innings during a June 18 loss. The pitcher is 3-7 with a 5.29 ERA in 15 starts this season.

Shortstop status The team's shortstop remains out while recovering from a concussion and is still in the return protocol. The shortstop participated in meetings and ran on the field before the most recent game. The shortstop is eligible to return from the seven-day concussion list but has not been cleared.

A team official said the shortstop will travel on the upcoming 10-game road trip but could not provide a timeline for a return. The shortstop entered the worst slump of the player's career before taking time off in mid-May and later developed a sore back that extended the absence to 19 games.
