Teamsters Ask Trump Administration for Up to 75% Tariffs on Mexican Beer Imports

The International Brotherhood of Teamsters urged the Trump administration to impose tariffs as high as 75% on Mexican beer imports, filing the request with the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative as part of its Section 301 investigation into whether certain countries' policies have created unfair manufacturing advantages, Fox News reported.
Sean O'Brien, general president of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, said the union could produce the same beer in the United States. "We can brew Modelo beer. It's the same recipe. Let's brew it in the United States," O'Brien told Fox News Digital.
Mexican beer production has risen 85% since 2014, with about 80% of those exports shipped to the United States, according to the union's filing. Capacity utilization at major U.S. breweries fell from 82% in 2013 to 65% in 2023.
Breweries have announced plans to add 19 million to 23 million hectoliters of production capacity in Mexico over the next five years. The Teamsters attributed the expansion to Mexico's 2023 tax incentives for export-oriented manufacturers and its broader Plan México industrial strategy. O'Brien said tariffs would support tens of thousands of union members in the brewery and distribution industry.
"I'm pro-America, pro-American worker, pro American jobs," he stated. The Office of the U.S. Trade Representative did not immediately respond to a request for comment, Fox News reported.
