Tech Companies Cut Over 50,000 Jobs in Early 2026 While Boosting AI Investments

Technology companies across the United States announced significant job cuts in early 2026, with Meta revealing 8,000 layoffs and a freeze on 6,000 open positions in the past week. Microsoft unveiled plans for up to 8,750 voluntary buyouts during the same period.

These moves follow Oracle's elimination of 30,000 positions in March 2026 and Block's reduction of 4,000 jobs, representing nearly 40 percent of its workforce.

U.S. economy in the first quarter of 2026, according to Challenger, Gray and Christmas. Of those, 27,645 were explicitly attributed to artificial intelligence, including a full quarter of all layoffs in March 2026.

Amid the reductions, companies reported heavy investments in AI-related operations. Meta projected capital expenditures of up to $145 billion in 2026. 2 billion on its cloud division in the first quarter of 2026, while Microsoft reported surging growth in its AI-driven cloud business.

Industry executives offered predictions on AI's impact. Mustafa Suleyman, head of Microsoft’s AI division, predicted that “most, if not all, professional tasks” could be automated within the next 12 to 18 months. OpenAI investor Vinod Khosla predicted to Fortune magazine that 80 percent of all jobs “will be capable of being done by an AI” by 2030.

Layoffs extended beyond tech giants. General Motors reduced its flagship Factory Zero plant to one shift in Detroit. UPS announced plans to close 27 additional parcel centers in 2026 and will have eliminated at least 68,000 jobs through early 2026.
