Temporary UFC arena rises on White House South Lawn ahead of June event
Construction crews installed a 90-foot open-air structure on the South Lawn on May 25. The temporary arena will host a UFC event on June 14. Officials said UFC will cover event costs.
nypost.comThe open-air structure stands 90 feet tall and is visible from many vantage points around the building. Officials said an additional 75,000 to 100,000 spectators will be able to watch on large screens placed farther from the White House Ellipse.
Construction and logistics changes Work on the arena began last week.
Two construction cranes for separate ballroom renovations are already operating on the east side of the White House campus. The temporary arena has required officials to suspend Marine One landings and departures from the South Lawn. The president now travels by motorcade to Joint Base Andrews to board Air Force One.
Event background The UFC fight is part of a series of events marking the 250th anniversary of the nation's founding. UFC is expected to cover all costs associated with staging the event. A mock-up of the arena structure was recently displayed in Lititz, Pennsylvania. Officials said the event will feature eight fights, including a headliner bout between two UFC fighters.
