One person was killed and 22 others were injured Friday night after a tent collapsed during an outdoor service at East Lake Community Church in Moneta, Virginia. Bedford County officials said the incident occurred as the congregation marked its 20th anniversary.
A severe storm cell moved through the area beforehand, bringing heavy rain, lightning and strong winds that caused the tent structure to fail.
Eleven people were transported to local hospitals. Eleven others received treatment on site for minor injuries. One person died at the scene. Bedford County classified the event as a mass casualty incident.
