Tepco Incoming Chair Says Foreign Alliances Not Ruled Out Amid Fukushima Cleanup Costs and Restructuring Push
Keisuke Yokoo said he would consider partnerships outside Japan as Tokyo Electric Power Co. seeks investments and asset sales to fund Fukushima cleanup costs.
Said he is open to forming alliances with companies outside Japan as the utility seeks to restructure its operations and fund the massive cost of cleaning up the Fukushima nuclear disaster. “We would not rule out an alliance simply because it’s foreign,” Yokoo said.
Yokoo was nominated as Tepco’s next chair in April, with his formal appointment expected later in June 2026 at the annual shareholders’ meeting.
He made the remarks to reporters on Tuesday. His comments come as the utility pushes ahead with a business plan unveiled in January that includes a search for partnership proposals to secure investments, help turn its business around, and the sale of some assets.
