Tesla has ended production of its Model S sedan and Model X SUV at the Fremont, California factory. The company announced the final units were completed after 14 years of Model S production and 11 years of Model X output. The move shifts the company's manufacturing focus toward its Optimus humanoid robot project.
Tesla said it has produced the final Model S and Model X vehicles at its Fremont, California factory. The announcement came on May 10, 2026, ending 14 years of Model S production and 11 years of Model X production. The company posted the update on X, noting the completion of the last units.
The Model S and Model X helped establish Tesla in the electric vehicle market. Before the Model S arrived in 2012, electric vehicles were largely built to satisfy environmental compliance requirements and were associated with limited range, awkward styling, sluggish acceleration, and basic design.
The Model S paired sports-car-like acceleration with roughly 250 miles of range and received software updates that improved the vehicle after purchase. The sedan became popular in Silicon Valley, with high-profile owners including celebrities. The Model X followed in 2015 as a family SUV equipped with falcon wing doors.
Together the vehicles helped position Tesla as the dominant U.S. electric vehicle seller and encouraged other automakers to develop electric crossovers.
The end of production for both models highlights Tesla's increased focus on automation, artificial intelligence and robots rather than traditional vehicle sales. The company plans to convert the California factory space into an assembly plant for its Optimus humanoid robot.
Production of the robots could begin by the end of the year. Neither the Model S nor the Model X ultimately became Tesla's highest-volume vehicles after the introduction of the lower-priced Model 3 and Model Y. The company is now left offering the Model 3, Model Y and Cybertruck.
Tesla did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the production change.
