Test Shows Potato Method Does Not Improve Plant Cutting Success

A social media trend suggests placing a plant cutting inside a raw potato before planting it in soil. The method is promoted as a way to keep the stem hydrated and supply nutrients while roots form. The procedure calls for inserting a fresh stem cutting with at least one node into a hole made in the potato.

The potato and cutting are then placed together in soil and kept in bright, indirect light. A test was conducted using a rose cutting and a pothos cutting. The pothos developed a small amount of root growth while the rose cutting collapsed without producing usable roots.
