Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton defeated four-term Sen. John Cornyn in the Republican primary runoff on May 26, securing 63.8 percent of the vote. Cornyn became the first Republican senator from Texas to lose a party nomination for reelection, with his Senate term ending in January.
"Tonight we just sent a Texas-sized message to Washington," Paxton said.
These included an SS death-head tattoo he said he did not recognize, explicit social media posts, and accusations from former girlfriends of sending explicit messages while married and one claim of physical assault. Sen.
Bernie Sanders (I-VT), who endorsed Platner, addressed the allegations at a Capitol Hill appearance. "We got a housing crisis. People can't afford healthcare, they can't afford groceries, they can't afford to fill up their gas tanks," Sanders said.
Paxton won by 28 points after formal impeachment proceedings, and Platner prevailed despite repeated front-page reports before the primary.
