A Texas attorney general sent a letter to the Big 12 conference on June 11 warning that sanctioning Texas Tech over its quarterback could expose the league to at least $200 million in damages and fees.
Background on the Eligibility Dispute The NCAA ruled the quarterback ineligible in May after he admitted to placing thousands of online bets, including at least 40 on Indiana football games while a member of that team. A Texas judge granted a temporary injunction on June 8 that restored eligibility subject to a two-game suspension.
The quarterback later withdrew the lawsuit and declared for the NFL supplemental draft, which the league did not hold.
The Big 12 filed a federal lawsuit on June 14 against the attorney general, Texas Tech, and school officials seeking a declaratory judgment that the First Amendment protects the conference's right to sanction the school under its bylaws. The quarterback, who started at Cincinnati the previous two seasons, must now wait until the 2027 NFL Draft to enter the league.
