Texas Democratic Senate Nominee Shifts Positions on Border Security and Other Issues

Texas Democratic Senate nominee James Talarico described former President Joe Biden's border policies as having caused "utter chaos" during a podcast interview this week. He said he had previously called out the administration on the issue and faced criticism from within his own party.

Talarico also stated that he supports the Second Amendment while favoring background checks and safe storage laws. He said he opposes gender reassignment surgeries for minors.

" He added that public safety should be a priority and that the government should keep out individuals who want to do harm. A campaign spokesperson said Talarico has never supported abolishing immigration enforcement agencies and has authored legislation to modernize ports of entry while calling for more Border Patrol agents.

The spokesperson also said both parties have failed on immigration and that Talarico supports deporting criminals rather than targeting long-term contributors to the economy.

Talarico previously voted against a state bill to ban cross-sex hormones for minors and expressed support for transgender children during public appearances in 2023. He has also criticized immigration enforcement agencies in past remarks. The campaign spokesperson said Talarico has always supported protecting the Second Amendment while enacting measures such as universal background checks.

Paxton's campaign did not respond to a request for comment on the recent statements.
