Texas Democrats Request Investigation Into Attorney General's Voter Registration

Texas Democrats filed a complaint Tuesday asking the secretary of state to investigate whether the attorney general committed election fraud by voting in the May primary runoff while registered at an address where he may no longer live. The Collin County Democratic Party submitted the complaint after ProPublica and The Texas Tribune reported that the attorney general has voted six times in the past two years at a Collin County address he left in June 2024.

Reporting linked the attorney general to a home in neighboring Denton County since February.

" She stated that the attorney general should face the same standards applied to others. Three election officials told ProPublica and the Tribune that state law requires voters to register where they live, though voters may temporarily use an address they intend to return to.

The officials said it is unclear whether the attorney general could make such an argument given the ongoing divorce proceedings.

" Alicia Pierce, spokesperson for Secretary of State Jane Nelson, said the office conducts an initial review and refers complaints to the attorney general's office if reasonable cause exists. San Antonio election lawyer Joaquin Gonzalez said the attorney general's office should hire an independent special investigator due to the conflict of interest in investigating itself.

The attorney general did not respond to questions about the complaint. A campaign spokesperson sent a statement accusing the "political elite" and reporters of digging through the attorney general's private life. Higbe said the complaint tests whether Texas' system of checks and balances still works.
