Texas Edges California 57-56 in Fortune 500 Headquarters Count

Texas now hosts 57 of the largest U.S. companies by revenue, one more than California. The shift reverses a ranking California held two years earlier.

Texas now leads the nation with 57 Fortune 500 company headquarters, one more than California’s 56, according to the latest annual ranking released Wednesday. S. companies by revenue.

Two years ago California held the top position; in 2024 the state counted 57 headquarters while Texas and New York each had 52. Oracle, Charles Schwab, and Chevron are among the major companies that have left California. From 2011 to 2021 the state recorded a net loss of 2 percent of its roughly 47,000 headquarters, according to the Public Policy Institute of California. New York follows with 53 headquarters.

Illinois and Ohio tie for fourth place with 29 companies each. 2 billion and ending the retailer’s 13-year run at the top of the list. Amazon, Exxon Mobil, General Motors, and Walmart are the only four companies to have held the number-one position since Fortune began publishing the ranking in 1955.
