nypost.comA Texas jury sentenced 19-year-old Karmelo Anthony to 35 years in prison on Tuesday after convicting him of first-degree murder in the stabbing death of Austin Metcalf. Anthony could become eligible for parole after serving 17 years. The conviction stems from an April 2, 2025, incident at Kuykendall Stadium in Frisco, Texas, during a high school track and field meet.
Anthony fatally stabbed Metcalf once in the chest with a folding knife after Metcalf asked him to move away from his team’s tent, Anthony refused, and Metcalf shoved him. Anthony’s lawyers argued at trial that the stabbing occurred in self-defense. The jury rejected that claim and returned a first-degree murder conviction.
Anthony has filed a notice of appeal seeking to overturn both the conviction and the sentence. ” Rosenberg said. He added that he understood the Metcalf family’s anger and pain and that “obviously a punishment should take place,” but asked whether the family would be better off if Anthony received the maximum sentence.
Rosenberg’s comments drew immediate criticism on X. One commenter asked what medal should be given for the act. Another noted that Anthony could be released on parole in his mid-30s under the 35-year term.
