Texas Republicans chose Attorney General Ken Paxton as their nominee for the U.S. Senate on Tuesday. Paxton defeated incumbent Senator John Cornyn in the primary. Paxton will face Democratic nominee James Talarico in November. Talarico is a state lawmaker and pastor who won his party's primary.

Democrats currently trail 53-47 in the Senate.

They would need to retain all their seats and gain four additional seats to take majority control. The party is targeting seats in North Carolina, Ohio, Maine, and Alaska. Additional races are being watched in Georgia, New Hampshire, Michigan, and Iowa.

Carolina, former Governor Roy Cooper is running for the open seat vacated by Senator Thom Tillis. Cook Political Report rates the contest as leaning Democratic. In Maine, Democratic candidate Graham Platner is seeking to unseat Senator Susan Collins.
