Brendan Sorsby withdrew his NCAA lawsuit and admitted to thousands of sports bets after applying for the supplemental draft. The Big 12 Conference continues its federal lawsuit seeking authority to impose penalties on Texas Tech.
Texas Tech quarterback Brendan Sorsby applied for the NFL supplemental draft after withdrawing his lawsuit against the NCAA. He admitted violating NCAA rules by placing thousands of bets on college sports, including 40 on Indiana football games while on that team's roster, and stated he placed at least $90,000 in total wagers while a college athlete.
The Big 12 Conference maintained its federal lawsuit against the NCAA as of Friday, June 20.
The suit, filed Monday in the Northern District of Texas, seeks declaratory judgment and injunctive relief to allow the conference to use its bylaws to govern Sorsby. The Big 12 board of directors plans a conference call early next week to review options.
The Big 12 presidents and chancellors have not rushed to pull the lawsuit because questions remain about Sorsby's NFL future and any possible legal retribution, a conference source said.
Sorsby must be ruled ineligible for college play by Monday, June 22, to qualify for the supplemental draft. The NFL must still approve his application before any 2026 supplemental draft occurs later this summer. No player has been chosen in an NFL supplemental draft since the Arizona Cardinals selected safety Jalen Thompson in the fifth round in 2019.
The last quarterback selected was Terrelle Pryor, taken with a third-round bid in 2011 by the Raiders. A Big 12 athletic director said the conference could impose penalties on Texas Tech, including requiring the school to share legal fees incurred by the other 15 members. "There may need to be consequences for Texas Tech, even if it works out this way," a conference source said.
"It was pointed out there's been legal fees involved in this action. Is it right for all 16 schools to share in those legal fees when we didn't have anything to do with starting it?
